EXPOSITION OF NEW MUSIC 2008
21th anniversary

Between Pop and Non-Pop
or The Spirit Blows Where He Wants

March 2 - 6, 2008
Fléda (Štefánikova 24, Brno)
Moravian Gallery in Brno, Museum of Applied Arts (Husova 14, Brno)
St. Augustine Church in Brno (Náměstí Míru 7)

The New Music is usually regarded as something extrinsic to a daily life. In fact its advances and discoveries are gradually absorbed by pop culture and become a part of the common experience. The whole pop and jazz music history, particularly the up-to-date dance scene with all of its offshoots, can prove it. We aim to implant current music trends into the appropriate context and draw attention to the cross-relationships which often remain concealed.
The basic New Music feature is its tending not to be pure "entertainment" - even in the styles of music presented in dance halls sparkle some moments which can shift its endeavor to a kind of more spiritual level. By dividing the festival program in three, due to acoustic ambient and other, different venues, we want to show their veiled unity - and the fact that spiritual experience can come from anywhere.

Tereza Damcová - singing, er-hu, performer, artist
Jiří Suchánek - music, camera, editing, and animation

"Meeting the Mateřídouška can cause a mystic experience which, to emotional persons, can bring a change of perception. (...) Mateřídouška is exactly the type of performance group which you can only love or hate. Nothing in-between. Opinions of those who were hit by the Mateřídouška are mostly so different, that it seems everybody at the concert sees and hears something else ..." (Sada Misek).

Operabil Memotopia (DE, SI)

Barbara Thun - voice
Marko Košnik - interactive systems

Vocalist and composer, Barbara Thun, performed one decade in the experimental vocal ensemble "Die Maulwerker"; now she pursues a solo path and creates marvelous voice objects. Marko Košnik (founder of group Laibach) belongs to the group of the principal European musicians that are conceiving multimedia art. Together they created a new musical dramatic form called "operabil", which combines composing, improvising, and performing elements, using digital images and interactive technologies. This new project was created especially for the Exposition of New Music in Brno.

The Slovak composers and musicians, Ľubomír Burgr and Marek Piaček cross borderlines of all genres without any restraint. Forearmed with experiences from several ensembles (i.e. Ali Ibn Rachid, Vapori del Cuore, Požoň sentimentál, VENI ensemble, Dogma, don@u.com, and SonDrian) and joint improvisations with many well-known musicians (i.e. Nick Collins, David Dramm, Hilary Jeffrey, Günter Müller, John Oswald, Otomo Yoshihide, Jon Rose, Elliot Sharp, Miki Skuta, Daan Vandevalle, Marián Varga, and Alfred Zimmerlin) they form one of the most original tributes in the contemporary musical scene. They process and recycle diverse sound materials and their music features exhilaration and true theatre playfulness.

Phosphor (DE)

Burkhard Beins - percussion
Axel Dörner - horn, laptop
Robin Hayward - bombardon
Annette Krebs - electric guitar
Andrea Neumann - "inside-piano", mixing desk
Michael Renkel - acoustic guitar, laptop
Ignaz Schick - electronic, gramophone

Phosphor ensemble, established in 2000, combines prominent musicians of the Berliner improvising scene, seeking high concentricity and lucidity in their own musical statement. Instead of generating a thick sound stream they rather work with the silence, inserting carefully considered sounds in it. The team play is full of suspense, and the ensemble sound is downright unique; each performance is an extraordinary event.

These dark drones of the laptop duo, former Bratislavian "noise-scene" pioneers, were appreciated in the British music press. This now international, electronic tandem belongs to the best arising from the Slovak digital music scene.

The Text of Light (US, DE
Text of Light - improvised music for silent movie by Stan Brakhage.

Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) a Alan Licht - guitars
Ulrich Krieger - saxophone

In 1974, Stan Brakhage, an independent American movie maker, presented his notable film Text of Light, the subject matter whereof is the light itself. In 2001, a New York group of the same name was established, focused above all on music improvisations to this film. Centered around Lee Ranadlo, the popular Sonic Youth guitar player, the group stands on the frontier of improvising and rock music, the group and represents current radical streams.

Clemens Merkel
(DE-CA) - violin recital

Christopher Butterfield: Clinamen
James Tenney: Koan
Markus Trunk: Four Stills
Caspar Johannes Walter: Schatten
Chris Newman: Yard Part

Clemens Merkel from Freiburg belongs among the present top violinists. In addition to his working with the Montréal based Quatuor Bozzini he also pursues his solo career largely introducing composers who try to redefine concepts of violin-playing. An on hand and unbelievably rich repertoire shows his ability to comply with the various technique and/or expression demands which he enriches with his immense involvement: his way of violin playing is both passionate and restrained, precise and sensitive - as the composition itself requires.

The up-to-date spiritual music does not walk in trodden paths. Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992) became a controversial personality manifesting catholic belief in unusual musical means. Today he is considered to be a classic. Alois Piňos, Miloš Štědroň, Peter Graham and Pavel Novák-Zemek represent various generations and present various concepts of spiritual oriented music.
