INTERNATIONAL MUSIC FESTIVAL BRNO
EXPOSITION OF NEW MUSIC 20th anniversary
"NO A...!" Non-Academic Approach
March 11-15th 2007
Music Club Fleda (Štefánikova 24, Brno, Czech Republic)
|
A man must play a thousand melodies before he understands what music is. It is said that it is necessary to first master a whole tradition and respect the necessary laws of music before one can do something really daring. Many, however, don't pay heed to the recognized notions of how music should look. They lose themselves in the music and play it without theories or barriers.
The dramaturgy of this year is based on the confrontation of two programs during one evening. Their contraposition provides the audience with a deeper look into the chosen area and comparison of various interpretations of non-academic endeavors. The informal environment of club Fleda directly calls for a presentation of this particular approach.

ATTO IX (Aleatoric Music for Drums and Roulette)
Vladimir Tarasov (Lithuania) - drums, acoustic objects
The drummer Vladimir Tarasov was a member of the legendary Vyatcheslav Ganelin Trio, a rather unique free-jazz group in the former Soviet Union. Ever since this time he has followed his own path leading him to the solo projects, theatre and dance collaborations, sound-art and even visual installations. He has performed with such musicians and artists as Andrew Cyrille, the Rova Saxophone Quartet, Anthony Braxton, Lauren Newton, and Josef Nadj. ATTO IX was originally created as "an educational event for children".

The POW ensemble can be regarded as the chamber ensemble of the 21st century, using computers as musical instruments.

María de Alvear URBAUM
Daan Vandewalle (Belgium)
María de Alvear, the German-Spanish composer, studied with Mauricio Kagel, but she also underwent shamanic training with the North American Indians. Her pieces represent a kind of spiritual ceremonies. She brings "wild thinking" into music. Some of her pieces are based on themes that are taboo to our Western way of thinking, provoking vehement debates and interesting interactions as a response to her work. This means that De Alvear´s work is also a courageous dialogue with the establishment.
The involvement of spiritual qualities and energetic knowledge in her work demands a responsible deep understanding of the great power of music and art, a power that should be taken care of in a good, strong way. Maria de Alvear has been very influenced by the trips she has made to different aboriginal nations in USA and Russia while looking for the inner essence of music and trying to understand the roots of musical development. Working intensively with Tsolagiu M.A. RuizRazo (Cherokee nation) and Rahkweeskeh (Tuscarora nation) has been very important for her. She feels they have been her most important teachers as regards the interaction between music and both physical and non-physical reality.
Daan Vandewalle enjoys an international reputation as new music specialist, with a strong focus on 20th century piano music. He studied at the Conservatory of Ghent, Belgium with Claude Coppens and at Mills College, California with Alvin Curran. He is specialized in contemporary American piano literature and gave concerts and lectures devoted to American music throughout the world. He is a fellow of the Belgian-American Educational Foundation and teaches piano at the Royal Conservatory of Ghent, Belgium.

Daan Vandewalle (Belgium)& Chris Cutler (GB)
Daan Vandewalle (Belgie)
Chris Cutler is the cofounder of ReR Records and the drummer for such bands as Henry Cow, News from Babel, Art Bears, EC Nudes, etc. A RIO (Rock In Opposition) artist, an inventor in the audible, conceptual, textual and visual arts, he has collaborated on numerous projects including releases with Lutz Glandien, Biota, Fred Frith, Peter Blegvad, etc. His label and its affiliates release records "to bring into the UK a whole range of records by groups & musicians whom we thought excellent & yet who were completely unknown here. Then - as now - we were only concerned with the quality of the music; & epiphenomenally with supporting independents- for many of the most interesting groups could only make their work available by pressing & manufacturing themselves."
Ever since his debut in 1992 (Ars Musica) Daan Vandewalle's recitals and projects have increasingly become more diverse and challenging. He improvised together with David Moss, Fred Frith, Han Bennink and many others. His improvisation with Chris Cutler promises a unique experience.

BIRDS BUILD NESTS ORCHESTRA
The young Prague musicians Petr Ferenc and Michal Brunclík play with vinyl and turntables. In spite of using old records, their music is surprisingly new. For this festival the original duo was enlarged to an "orchestra" with Matěj Kratochvíl (reeds), Michal Zbořil (guitar, keyboard), Michal Cimala (berlino [a home-made instrument]) and Darrell Jónsson (tabletop guitar, synth.)
SUS FUTUROS
Marcelo Aguirre - drums, voice & Ulrich Krieger (Berlin) - saxophone, voice, electronics
They come from different backgrounds, but in musical improvisation they understand each other telepathically. The duo comprised of Ulrich Krieger and Marcelo Aguirre proceed to select highly differentiated material rather than impressionistic ideas, to slowly build up canvases where velocity and complexity prevail hand to hand with cyclic repetition.

Petr Cígler is a chemist by profession (involved in HIV research), but he is one of the most interesting Czech composers as well. In his music he uses a systematic "scientific" approach and sometimes a very personal humor.

Mike Keusen
Gareth Davis is an internationally respected bass-clarinetist with a wide range of activities. For his new project he invited his colleagues from Switzerland: pianist Mik Keusen creates incredible soundscapes, combining minimalism with modern groove and improvisation. The drummer Julian Sartorius is active mainly in the field of New Jazz. The combination of these three different musical types arouses expectations.
